In Spain, when meeting a friend, we give 2 kisses. The non-written norm is that women kiss women, women kiss men but men do not kiss men. Kisses are not only circunscribed to family and friends, they can be given also at work, depending on many factors. Not to everybody, but to a close colleague or when you haven't seen a person in a while.

We like to kiss. I remember, in my teenager years (and 20s too) when I was meeting my friends to go out everyday of the weekend, the round of kisses could last 5 minutes when we were the whole group together. We just saw each other the day before but that didn't matter, the round was mandatory and a pleasure. For some reason kisses are usually given from left to right but it might be a cultural issue as I have realized Greek people do it the other way around and I think Belgians and Turkish too (to be confirmed).

In the Netherlands they give 3 kisses. Don't ask me why. I wonder where does it come that one cheek is kissed twice because obviously there's one cheek that gets double. If you know the origins of this please let me know. Anyway, the Dutch don't kiss as much as the Spaniards and I had some strange moments when I kissed someone normally but the other person freaked out and looked at me like "what the heck are you doing? "

I am not aware of any statistics... and actually don't feel like looking for it, but I am just going to throw a number in. I would say that 95% of the cars in the Netherlands have a hitch ball (trekhaak in Dutch). Why, oh why? Well, the Dutch really follow the "do it yourself" lifestyle and there's also a big culture of second hand market. This means people need to move furniture and things quite some times and renting a van or requesting the delivery service from a shop might be expensive. Therefore, everybody has a hitch ball and it's very common to see rental trailers everywhere: in the DIY stores for sure, but also in petrol stations!! These can be rented just for a couple of hours.

Then the problem comes when imagine you have a big car... like a Kia Sorento, and you accidentally park too close to a car with a hitch ball, to the point that you car gets slightly on top of this other car... and it gets hooked. Then imagine, just imagine, that you have to lift up your big Kia Sorento with your bare hands to take it out. Just imagine...

"Will she post ever again?" I know you all, my million followers, were asking... Well, here I am! It has been more than a year. A year that has been quite busy for me. As an example one year ago, I had to stop reading a book in page 97 and I am reopening it today... in page 97. But I never forgot this blog. It will not dissapear from my big to do list. New post about The Netherlands is about to appear!

When I arrived to the Netherlands I had to commute a lot by car and the radio was my companion. Basically 'SublimeFM' (formerly known as 'ArrowJazzFM') and 'SkyRadio' were, and still are, my favourites. I was surprised with the amount of good Dutch artists and a big bunch of them were singing in English which makes it more appealing for a non-Dutch speaker.
Here is a sample of the first interesting Dutch artists I discovered.
Fort Pampus in Pampus Island (left) and Fort bij de Liebrug, Haarlemmerliede (right)

Believe it or not, Amsterdam is surrounded by a 135 km long ring of fortifications located 15 to 20 kilometers around the center of the city.
It was constructed by the Ministry of War mostly between 1881 and 1914 and it was conceived as a waterline, which is a series of defensive fortifications separated by inundation areas. The intention was to flood these areas with approximately 40 cm height of water which would make it impossible for both ships and infantry to go through. However, the invention of airplanes and tanks made the forts obsolete almost as
soon as they were finished so the waterline was never used for its
original purpose.

Due to its value for humankind, the waterline was inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 and many of the forts have turned into museums which can be visited. Some others are used for hosting charitable foundations, art studios, different hobby clubs and even restaurants. In fact, I rehearse with a choir in one of these forts: Fort bij de
Liebrug, in Haarlemmerliede and I live very close to the Fort of
Hoofddorp.

As you can see in the satellite map below, Hoofddorp is split into two by a large dike known as the Geniedijk
(Engineers' dike). If you want to see how all fortresses are connected, follow the dike in the map to the north-west and you will
find the fort of Vijfhuizen. If you go to south-east, you will see
the fort of Alsmeer. It is impressive, right?

The title of this post could be translated as 'Better pin than cash' and it refers to the preferred way of paying in the Netherlands. I understood pretty soon that without a debit card you are unable to buy lots of things here. For instance, a lot of train and metro ticket machines do not accept cash. There are also several self-service petrol stations with only pay-at-the-pump systems. In some other places, such as the canteen of Utrecht university, you can only pay with 'chipknip' which is the electronic purse card.

Why this anti-cash trend?
Cash has a lot of drawbacks for both sellers and consumers. As an iterative process, customers get money physically at an ATM or bank and sellers need to drive it to their banks even hiring an armored car service. Both need to have enough amount of bank notes, coins, or exact change in some cases. And of course, the most obvious reason, handling cash is less safe for everybody: miscalculated change, employees cheating, assaults, robberies...

However, there's a certain type of store in The Netherlands in which you can never pay with an electronic transfer... Can you guess where this is?

De Kat in't Wijngaert, a nice brown cafe we visited in De Jordaan.

On the first days of January it was all quiet after the New Year's celebrations; nice days to go to Amsterdam without all the usual hustle and bustle of the city. It was a relaxing, casual day wandering around the Jordaan when we entered the first place we saw for a coffee. I told my boyfriend "this is a typical brown cafe" and he replied "brown cafe, what's that?". And so I asked some of my friends and it turned out not everybody knows this concept so here it goes explained in the blog.

We could say that brown cafes ('bruin cafes') are to the Netherlands what pubs are to England and they are part of the Dutch landscape as much as canals and bicycles. The typical brown cafe can be described as an old bar with dark wooden floors (hence the name) and a casual atmosphere with beer on tap and a good lunch/snack menu including salads, sandwiches, omelets and, of course, a varied coffee offer.

The decoration usually shows pictures and collectibles accumulated throughout the years. In case the place is named after let's say a bird, you will see all possible figures, drawings and objects with bird shapes and feathers. It may look a bit shabby but the result is a cozy, comfortable place of which you can easily become a fixture. You can even sit outside all year round, something that has always surprised me here since in Spain is not that common to have terraces in winter. Only rain can prevent from being outside, otherwise it is always a good day :-)

Our friends couldn't believe it but we did it: we went to a spa in the Netherlands!

Where's the difficulty? you may think… A spa is always a nice place to relax where you can get massages, treatments and enjoy the curative powers of mineral waters. Yes, you do all that… but the difference between a spa in the Netherlands a spa in Spain relies on the dress code. How should I put it… the dress code is kind of strict in the spa centres in Holland and surprise, surprise, the code is no dress at all. So yes, my dear friends, it's either your birthday suit or no entry.

The first experience can be a bit shocking but after a while you start feeling it's all natural and it's much less erotic than what you would expect. Despite this, I have to confess that whenever I go to a spa here there's a constant thought in my head: "Please, I don't want to meet anybody I know!"

This is an insect hotel. I've never seen anything like this but apparently the fly likes it (see picture below) and she's checking in. Batman also likes it.

This is also the first time I see that if you want more information you go Google it. Instead of just pointing you to a website or placing a QR code (that would have been cooler but maybe disturbing for the flies... who knows). These things only happen in Hoofddorp!

We all know they keep it close to themselves. It's difficult to touch it,
it's almost impossible to take a glance at its content and of course we could never dream of having one in our hands... but the day has come. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to announce that this humble blogger had access to one of the world's best kept secrets: a real Dutch agenda. We cannot reveal how it ended up in our hands, but it did... for a few seconds, it did.

Let's analyze this picture together:

It has a weekly view with a small monthly view on top

All days are clearly divided and have at least one activity

A (still undecipherable) color coding is noticeable

The agenda is big enough to hold extra documents...

...yet small enough to be kept in a handbag

There's a mysterious hand on the top right corner: the agendas thief!

But the most important conclusion is... Yes! They are busy! They really are. Do not try to surprise a Dutch person with a sudden visit or suggest a spontaneous plan. They will need to look it up in their agendas and it's possible that the only available spot is two months from now. Be respectful and adapt to their rhythm, maybe you will end up having an agenda too (though not my case... yet!)

I can't believe I didn't talk about this yet. The Dutch have a very clever and simple system to stop unsolicited mail from invading your letter box.

The 'nee-sticker' was introduced in 1992 by the Dutch Dialogue Marketing Association. There are two available versions: the 'nee-nee' sticker, meaning that you don't want any unadressed correspondence, and the 'nee-ja' sticker, which will block all advertising but will allow door-to-door newspapers to still be thrown in your letter box. Note that this sticker only refers to unadressed mail, so you'll still receive everything with a name on it.

The picture above says it all: the letter boxes with visible mail inside have no sticker. And with a close look to the picture you can easily guess where it was taken :-)

If you live in Holland you can ask for a free 'nee-sticker' at your city-hall.

One of the things I like the most about the Netherlands is the total synergy of urban spaces and nature. You can go walking down the street in Amsterdam and find swans, cranes and ducks in the canals. In Hoofddorp, which I wouldn't call a rural place, I just have to go 50 meters away from my house to find cows, sheep and goose. They are just there, in the middle of the city.

Lately, whenever I go to Madrid, I miss the water and the nature. I get the feeling that every green item is designed and artificially placed in a specific manner, solely as a decoration motif. Unfortunately, water is not that abundant there. It's much easier to have all these green spaces when your country doesn't face water scarcity. I bet they don't know what water restriction is here in Holland, despite the Rhine being recently at its lowest level since 1921. I remember having water restrictions when I was small and it was not fun. I guess that's the reason why I usually don't complain much about the weather; thanks to all that rain we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of this country.

Though a sunny day makes it even more beautiful :-)

Credits: SomosUno

If you happen to have:

- 2 big boxes of M5000 Sun servers (ok, 'maybe' it could work with any other thing)
- 3 aerosol paint in pink
- Mattel logo and 'Barbie' typeface
- a good printer
- 1 spray glue
- a lot of pink wrapping paper
- nylon flat rope
- blonde wig/plastic toupee
- pink/pastel colour clothes

Then you could build your own Barbie/Ken costume like we did for a carnival party here in Holland. Carnival is very popular in the South of the Netherlands but this party happened in Amsterdam since it was organized by a friend from the Canary Islands where Spain's largest carnival is celebrated.

Come on Barbie, let's go party!

Soon after arriving to the Netherlands it was necessary to arrange housing, bank accounts, etc. I was pleasantly surprised that we were offered a cup of coffee at all these places. I think I’ve never been offered coffee so many times in my life and sure not when opening a simple bank account in Spain or passing by a real estate asking for the available houses.

The ubiquitous coffee machines invade this country. They are omnipresent not only at every household (after all the Philips Senseo is a Dutch invention) but also, and for free use, at the grocery stores, car service garages, sport centres and even fashion shops. All Albert Heijn supermarkets have a coffee machine for the clients and it’s very normal to see people doing their groceries with a cup of coffee on their shopping carts (yes, the carts have a cup holder!).

A funny anecdote happened to me once at Utrecht University. I had an exam and when I arrived to the classroom each table had a coffee cup with the correspondent teaspoon and sugar sachet. I thought: “how nice of them! this is very considerate but unfortunately I didn’t bring my thermal coffee bottle”. Then, when we were waiting for the teacher to instruct us about the exam format, he looked at us very seriously and said: “those who want tea, please put your cup upside down. Coffee and tea will be served in a minute.” And those were his only instructions.

We are never sure whether we should count from the 29th: the day we arrived to the Netherlands, with only the things that could fit in our car after a long trip through a frozen Spain and France, or the 30th: the day we woke up in our new land, facing an uncertain future with lots of enthusiasm. Anyhow, at that time I couldn't have answered the question "how long are you going to be here?" and as time goes by it seems that I could have answered "long time, my friend".

But again now... how long will I be here? I simply don't know. I like living life as it comes and I don't usually think a lot about the future. Things just happen. This anniversary just happened and I am very happy with it.

So, for now... long life Holland!

¡larga vida a Holanda!

The same way New York is known as 'The Big Apple', Paris as 'The City of Lights' or 'The city of Love', and Rome as 'The Eternal City', Madrid and Amsterdam have nicknames too.

Madrid is known as 'El Foro' ('The Forum') as a way to compare the capital of Spain and political centre of the country with Rome and the Roman Forum, where also all governmental decisions were taken.

Amsterdam's nickname is 'Mokum'. Many words in the Dutch language have their origins in Hebrew and Yiddish. 'Mokum' comes from 'Makom', the Yiddish word for 'place' or 'city'. In Yiddish, the names of some Dutch cities were shortened to 'Mokum' followed by the first letter of the name of the city. Therefore, Amsterdam was known as 'Mokum Aleph' (city A) and Rotterdam was referred as 'Mokum Resh' (city R). Nowadays, just 'Mokum' alone is representative of Amsterdam.

So now, next time you go to Amsterdam, you can confidently say that you are going to 'Mokum'.

Maybe you are not familiar with how the Dutch language sounds but to me it's an explosion of 'g', 'h', 'j' and 't'. Just the question 'how are you?' And to be honest, it doesn't sound very musical... but oh dear, the surprise comes at the end.

When they say goodbye your ears are flooded with the finest melody. It's not just one word... it's a bunch of them, a sweet combination of consonants and vowels. If you say 'doei' they will reply 'dag', if you say 'dag' they will answer back with 'doeg', if you say 'doeg' they will reply 'doegie' and so on, always with a different word.

The funny thing comes when you see a group of friends saying goodbye to each other and you get to hear all the possible options at one time. It would go like: 'doei', 'haije', 'doegie', 'daaaag', 'toedels', 'doei doei', 'toedeledoki', 'doeg', 'laters', taubé', 'groetjes', 'toedeloeeeee'! :-) 'Google Translate' to hear it (click there on the speaker icon).

It could be defined as a delightful musical ensemble of sudden unexpected 'a capella' singers. Are you ready to say goodbye to 2011 in this musical way?

--
My sincere gratitude to my Dutch colleagues Elisa, Karen and Lonneke for their invaluable contribution to this post!

Then I started my research on how to become a blood donor here in the Netherlands and I discovered that the approach is quite different compared to the process in Spain. If in the last post I praised the Dutch efficiency for certain procedures, in this one I have to confess that I am quite disappointed.

Blood donation in the Netherlands
The Dutch system has a big amount of preliminary steps. At the donation center you fill out a registration card with your contact information. Then, once you are in the system and this can take a while, they will call you to schedule an appointment for a medical examination. First-time donors do not donate blood after this first examination, you have to wait for notice of your eligibility by postal mail. It can again take weeks until you receive this letter in which you will be informed of the date from which you are allowed to donate within a two-week window. Then the donation itself has the regular on-the-spot preliminary testing.

Blood donation in Spain
You walk into a local blood drive, hospital or donor center, you complete the tests in a matter of minutes, donate, and go. Your blood is of course thoroughly tested afterwards, and if any problem it will be disposed of.

After learning about the differences I’ve made my decision: I will donate blood in my next trip to Spain.

Due to my profession I often talk about usability and user experience referred to online tools. Keep reading to see how important user experience is in 'real life' too, applied in this case to the process of buying a second hand car.

Once you have found the car of your dreams, and from my experience this can take a while, some paperwork is needed in order to buy it. Let's compare this process in both Spain and the Netherlands:

In Spain:
Be sure you have a full day free and do all the steps together with the seller.

Go to 'Hacienda' (tax office), find the right queue for vehicle transfers and be certain that's the one you have to be, because when your turn comes you don't want to be told you should have been queueing at the other, even longer, one. Once at the desk, hand out the forms 620 ('Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales') and 430 ('Declaración de Transmisión de Compraventa') both previously downloaded or bought, to the clerk. After submitting these papers the officer will tell you the amount to pay (currently 4% of the value of the vehicle according to the official valuation). If you are lucky enough you will be able to pay this amount after queueing again in the same office but it can be that you have to go to a bank and then come back. Once you have paid, present the payment proof (usually to another clerk, after another queue) and if everything is in order, your documents will be validated with a stamp.

With all these documents and the car documents, go to the "Jefatura de tráfico" office. Warning: there are only 3 in all Madrid province!. Wait the never-ending queue to pay again some taxes and then wait again at the next window where you and the seller will submit all the possible documents you can think of: the receipt of the payment you just made, yours and the seller's ID documents, car papers, photocopies, contract, etc. Finally you get the vehicle registration with your name on it.

In the Netherlands:
Take the car documents, your passport and, if not Dutch, a proof of registration in your municipality not older than 3 months. Go with the seller to the closest post office. There will be no queue. Fill in a form, pay 9,25€ and get the car documents registered in your name.

Moral: It's a big difference when processes are designed to make user’s experience easier, in this example the citizen, who should not interact physically with all possible administrations involved in one single process. Instead, the citizen triggers the process in just one place and afterwards, the entities involved communicate between them.

No habrá cola.

Following with the series of posts about those things that a Spanish person misses here in Holland, there is a product that is always mentioned by all Spaniards at one given time: "Couldina".

This medicine is mainly composed of aspirin and a couple of more ingredients which are really good for congestion. For me, it is the best thing to fight a cold. It does not exist here in the Netherlands and I know a bunch of Spaniards who buy it whenever they go to Spain and bring it here for those future under-the-weather days.

Are you also living away from your home country? Then, please tell me about those things you are "forced to import" from your country because you simply cannot live without them!

Walking through the parking lot of the international organization I work for, I realized that the same letters were appearing in almost every car license plate. I'm not talking about 'CD' which everybody knows stands for 'Corps Diplomatique'. These letters were 'BN' and 'GN' and it couldn't just be a coincidence, so I did some research and I discovered that this actually means something:

"BN-GN: For vehicles whose owner is not liable to taxation such as staff from embassies without diplomatic status, consulates or international organisations such as ESA ('B'uitenlander in 'N'ederland or 'G'een 'N'ederlander meaning Foreigner in Netherlands or Not Dutch respectively)."
Source: Wikipedia, Vehicle Registration Plates of the Netherlands

I have to say now that I am just 'a normal person' :-), nor an ambassador nor an astronaut, thus my car license plate does not have 'BN' or 'GN'. Anyway, I am not so sure that I would like to have anything that says "I am not Dutch and I don't pay taxes here" to the rest of the world. Is this distinction really necessary? Would you like to have something like that?

Traducido de: Wikipedia, Vehicle Registration Plates of the Netherlands

This thing of having “collaborators” it’s a real honor for me. Thanks again Manuel for your contribution!

Today in Pilar’s blog, I’m going to talk about one of the things I liked the most in Amsterdam: the Westerkerk (Prinsengracht 281). Surprisingly, this church goes almost unnoticed by the tourists (or at least, that was my impression). Perhaps being close to Anne Frank house, far more visited; not appearing on the top of things to visit in Amsterdam; and the fact that only the tower can be visited (the church is exclusively for the religious service), make it a lesser-known attraction.

There are two really impressive things about Westerkerk: firstly, the guided tours to the tower. These tours take place every half an hour (it's mandatory to book in advance) for a maximum of six people without backpacks! since some corridors are really narrow. The tour begins by climbing up a stone spiral staircase that makes you think “Oh my, I’m afraid of the way back!”. The visit is superbly organized: the tower has different levels in which the tourist guide stops to explain more about the building, the carillon and the impressive bells, so it does not feel tiring although the staircase becomes steeper and narrower as you climb it up, so you keep thinking “Oh my, now I’m reeeaaally afraid of the way back!” :-)

The second impressive thing about this visit comes at the end: the views of Amsterdam from the top of the tower. Well, it’s not actually the top which is not accessible, but the tourists can go 50-60 meters up and that’s more than enough to have a panoramic breathtaking view of the center of Amsterdam.

So, seriously, if you're going to Amsterdam or you are already there but never had the time to go to this church, please don’t forget to visit the fabulous tower of the Westerkerk!

Manuel Dopazo

Manuel Dopazo

When you live abroad your vacation planning changes a lot, mainly because your home country (your hometown, to be precise) suddenly becomes a 'holiday' destination. Please note the scare quotes because it is not holiday at all. Everybody who lives abroad knows that. You end up stressed out and pressured to catch up and meet with one million people in only 5 days, besides taking care of your family and some other errands such as official paperwork and doctor appointments (because we all prefer 'our' doctors!).

In some occasions there is also time for a proper holiday, away from 'home' and... 'the other home' :-) The country you live in can have a major role when it comes to choose where to go on vacation. I mean, while living in Spain you go a lot to... Spain! because Spain is great for holiday and we all know it! Places like Valencia, Castellón, Asturias, Baleares, Canarias... As for going abroad, a lot of people go to Mexico, Dominican Republic or Argentina.

However, while living in Spain we never thought of going to Aruba or Indonesia just because they are not popular destinations there or even countries you hear a lot about. These two countries are more popular in Holland: Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Indonesia is a former Dutch colony. Not only you hear a lot more about these places here, you also have more possibilities to actually meet people from there. My best friend from Utrecht University happens to be Indonesian and she gave the best tips ever for the fantastic holiday I just came back from :-)
