The 3 kisses issue

In Spain, when meeting a friend, we give 2 kisses. The non-written norm is that women kiss women, women kiss men but men do not kiss men. Kisses are not only circunscribed to family and friends, they can be given also at work, depending on many factors. Not to everybody, but to a close colleague or when you haven't seen a person in a while.

We like to kiss. I remember, in my teenager years (and 20s too) when I was meeting my friends to go out everyday of the weekend, the round of kisses could last 5 minutes when we were the whole group together. We just saw each other the day before but that didn't matter, the round was mandatory and a pleasure. For some reason kisses are usually given from left to right but it might be a cultural issue as I have realized Greek people do it the other way around and I think Belgians and Turkish too (to be confirmed).

In the Netherlands they give 3 kisses. Don't ask me why. I wonder where does it come that one cheek is kissed twice because obviously there's one cheek that gets double. If you know the origins of this please let me know. Anyway, the Dutch don't kiss as much as the Spaniards and I had some strange moments when I kissed someone normally but the other person freaked out and looked at me like "what the heck are you doing? "

En España, al encontrarnos con un amigo, le damos dos besos. La norma, no escrita, es que las mujeres besan a las mujeres y a los hombres, pero los hombres no se besan entre ellos. Los besos no sólo se circunscriben a la familia y amigos, pueden ser dados en el trabajo, dependiendo de muchos factores. No a todo el mundo, pero a un colega cercano o cuando a lo mejor no has visto a alguien en mucho tiempo. 

Nos gusta besar. Recuerdo, en mi adolescencia (y más tarde también) cuando me juntaba con mis amigos para salir y cada día del fin de semana la ronda de besos podría durar cinco minutos estando todo el grupo entero. Nos acabábamos de ver el día antes, pero eso no importaba, la ronda era obligatoria y un placer. Por alguna razón nos damos los besos de izquierda a derecha pero me da que es una cuestión cultural porque he notado que griegos, turcos y belgas empiezan al revés. 

En los Países Bajos se dan tres besos. No me preguntéis por qué. Me pregunto de dónde viene eso de que haya que besar una mejilla dos veces porque obviamente hay una mejilla que recibe el doble. Si alguien conoce la razón por favor que me lo haga saber. De todos modos, los holandeses no besan tanto como los españoles y he vivido más de un momento extraños cuando le di besos a alguien siendo para mí normal, pero la otra persona me miraba aterrorizada con cara de "¿qué diablos estás haciendo?"

The damn hitch ball / La maldita bola de remolque

I am not aware of any statistics... and actually don't feel like looking for it, but I am just going to throw a number in. I would say that 95% of the cars in the Netherlands have a hitch ball (trekhaak in Dutch). Why, oh why? Well, the Dutch really follow the "do it yourself" lifestyle and there's also a big culture of second hand market. This means people need to move furniture and things quite some times and renting a van or requesting the delivery service from a shop might be expensive. Therefore, everybody has a hitch ball and it's very common to see rental trailers everywhere: in the DIY stores for sure, but also in petrol stations!! These can be rented just for a couple of hours.

Then the problem comes when imagine you have a big car... like a Kia Sorento, and you accidentally park too close to a car with a hitch ball, to the point that you car gets slightly on top of this other car... and it gets hooked. Then imagine, just imagine, that you have to lift up your big Kia Sorento with your bare hands to take it out. Just imagine...

No tengo conocimiento de ninguna estadística ... y tampoco voy a buscarlo, simplemente voy a aventurarme con un número: yo diría que el 95% de los coches de Holanda tienen una bola de remolque (trekhaak en holandés). ¿Por qué, oh por qué? Bueno, porque los holandeses son férreos seguidores del estilo de vida "hágalo usted mismo" y también hay una gran cultura del mercado de segunda mano. Esto significa que la gente necesita bastante a menudo mover muebles y cosas y el alquiler de una furgoneta o solicitar el servicio de entrega en una tienda puede ser bastante caro. Por lo tanto, todo el mundo tiene una bola de remolque y es muy común ver remolques que la gente puede alquilar incluso por horas en todas partes: en las tiendas de bricolaje por supuesto, pero también en las gasolineras!!

Pero el problema viene cuando imagina que tienes un coche grande ... como un Kia Sorento, y aparcas accidentalmente demasiado cerca de un coche con una bola de remolque, hasta el punto de que tu coche queda ligeramente por encima de este otro coche... y se engancha. Y después imagina, sólo imagina, que tienes que levantar tu gran Kia Sorento con tus propias manos para desengancharlo. Sólo imagina...

I'm back / De vuelta

"Will she post ever again?" I know you all, my million followers, were asking... Well, here I am! It has been more than a year. A year that has been quite busy for me. As an example one year ago, I had to stop reading a book in page 97 and I am reopening it today... in page 97. But I never forgot this blog. It will not dissapear from my big to do list. New post about The Netherlands is about to appear!

"¿Publicará alguna vez más?" Sé que todos vosotros, mis millones de seguidores, os preguntabais ... Bueno, ¡aquí estoy! Ha pasado más de un año. Un año bastante ocupado para mí. Como ejemplo, hace un año tuve que dejar de leer un libro en la página 97 y estoy hoy retomándolo ... en la página 97. Pero nunca me olvidé de este blog. Seguirá en mi gran lista de tareas. Un nuevo post acerca de los Países Bajos está a punto de aparecer!
