Another event that happened recently is that... I finished my master!!!!

Yes, from now on... I am a Master of Science in Information Science!!! How does it sound? Nice, huh?

After two years studying Content and Knowledge Engineering, struggling with deadlines, presentations, while working and relocating at the same time, getting accustomed to study in a different language, dealing with group assignments, individual assignments, exams and so... it is incredible that now it is all over. And the funny thing is that if someone had told me 5 years ago that I was going to achieve all this, I would have not believe it.

Now, I have to face the professional world again. But let me tell you that if you are thinking about making a pause in your professional career and become a student again, it is all worth it. Take the chance if you can!!!


Otra de las cosas que ha pasado recientemente es que... ¡¡¡he terminado mi Master!!!

Sí, de ahora en adelante... soy una "Master of Science in Information Science" ¿Cómo suena eso? Bien, ¿verdad?.

Después de dos años estudiando "Content and Knowledge Engineering", luchando con las fechas de entrega, las presentaciones, mientras al mismo tiempo trabajaba y me mudaba aquí, aprendiendo a estudiar en un idioma diferente, lidiando con trabajos en grupo, trabajos individuales, exámenes, etc... es increíble que todo eso se haya terminado. Y lo curioso es que si alguien me hubiera dicho hace 5 años que yo iba a conseguir todo esto, no lo habría creído.

Ahora me tengo que enfrentar al mundo profesional de nuevo. Pero dejadme que os diga que si estáis pensando en hacer una pausa en vuestra carrera profesional y ser estudiante de nuevo, merece la pena. ¡Aprovechad la oportunidad si la tenéis!

Short summary / Pequeño resumen

It has been strange these last weeks around here. A lot of new things happened. I will try to stick to the chronological path.

• I started "working" in a company like one month ago. The quotation marks are because I'm actually doing my thesis project there, thus I am not an employee but an intern. It's a good project, even more related to what I wanted than I expected. It's also a good company and an international one, so english is the official language at work. Alas, at lunch I am almost the only non-dutch speaker and then, as lunch is not "working hours", they speak in Dutch. As I don't understand any Dutch I seize the opportunity to think about stupid things like "what if music ends due to the end of notes permutation?"


• We have the craziest weather this summer. Dutch weather can be described as having four seasons in one day. It can be rainy and foggy in the morning, then sunny in the afternoon and windy in the evening. For example, I was caught by a heavy storm on Thursday and when I got to the office my hair was dripping wet as getting out of the shower. Later on it was completely sunny, as if nothing had happened... except my hair was still a mess :-(.


• Our friend Edu left the Netherlands one week ago. We don't know yet if it's going to be permanent but he decided to spend with us his last days here. Honestly, I don't know if it was due more to logistic matters than sentimental but we toasted with mojitos and played "WoW". Edu is completely addicted to WoW and we are trying to make him go to rehab but he says nooo, noooo, noooo (easy joke).


• Our friends Óscar and Yolanda passed by Amsterdam during a trip along France, Belgium and, naturally, The Netherlands. It was quite a surprise because we didn't know they were here and we managed to arrange a nice evening for all of us (Edu and my brother included) in Haarlem. Thanks for saving some time for us friends.


• We have adopted another cat!!! (see photo). This is really recently news 'cause it just happened a few hours ago and Pichí (our cat) will have to get used to the fact that she just had a little Dutch brother. She is snorting right now... humm, I guess that's not a good sign but we have to give her time. "Bacardi" (beautiful name, huh?) is a one and a half years old tabby cat and he seems very well-behaved, so far.

And that's all, folks. No holidays in Honolulu or Bahamas for the time being :-), not even in Spain. Just work, gym (did I say we go to a gym?) and cats.


Las últimas semanas han sido peculiares. Han pasado un montón de cosas nuevas. Intentaré ceñirme al curso cronológico de los eventos.

• Estoy "trabajando" en una empresa desde hace más o menos un mes. Lo pongo con comillas porque en realidad estoy haciendo mi proyecto de tésis, por lo que no soy una empleada sino más bien una estudiante en prácticas. Tengo un proyecto muy bueno, que está incluso más relacionado con lo que quería de lo que yo esperaba. La empresa es muy buena e international por lo que el inglés es el idioma oficial de trabajo. Desgraciadamente, a la hora de la comida soy casi la única que no habla holandés y, como la comida no es trabajo, suelen hablar en holandés. Como no entiendo nada de holandés aprovecho para pensar cosas estúpidas como "¿se acabaría la música al terminarse la permutación de notas musicales?"


• Tenemos un tiempo loco este verano. El tiempo por aquí podría describirse como tener las cuatro estaciones en un sólo día. Puede llover y estar nublado por la mañana, luego soleado al mediodía y con viento por la tarde. Por ejemplo, el jueves me pilló una buena tormenta y cuando llegué a la oficina mi pelo estaba completamente empapado como si acabara de salir de la ducha. Luego salió el sol como si nada... aunque mi pelo se quedó hecho un desastre :-(.


• Nuestro amigo Edu se ha vuelto a España hace una semana. Aún no sabemos si es definitivo pero pasó sus últimos días aquí con nosotros. A decir verdad, no sabemos si esto se debió más a temas logísticos que sentimentales pero al menos brindamos con mojitos y jugamos al "WoW". Edu es adicto al "WoW" y nosotros intentamos que vaya a "rehab" pero él que dice que nooooo, nooooo, nooooo (chiste fácil).


• Nuestros amigos Óscar y Yolanda pasaron por Ámsterdam durante su viaje por Francia, Bélgica y, por supuesto, Holanda. Fue una gran sorpresa porque no teníamos ni idea de que estaban por aquí y nos las apañamos para tener una agradable velada para todos (incluídos Edu y mi hermano) en Haarlem.


• ¡Hemos adoptado otro gato! Esto es muy reciente porque ha sucedido hace unas horas y Pichí (nuestra gata) ha de hacerse a la idea de que ha tenido un hermanito holandés. Ahora mismo le está bufando... mmm, creo que esto no es buena señal pero habrá que darle tiempo. "Bacardi" (bonito nombre, ¿eh?) es un gato tabby de año y medio que parece muy bueno, por ahora.

Y eso es todo amigos. No hay vacaciones en Honolulú o Bahamas por el momento :-), ni siquiera en España. Sólo trabajo, gimnasio (¿mencioné que vamos a un gimnasio?) y gatos.

This is the first photo we took in The Netherlands: a big question mark at Amsterdam University. Our future here was uncertain at that moment but now everything is crystal clear and the assessment after on year living here is very positive.

Esta es la primera foto que hicimos en Holanda: una interrogación gigante en la Universidad de Amsterdam. En ese momento nuestro futuro aquí era muy incierto, pero ahora todo está claro como el agua y el balance del año ha sido muy positivo.

Things I have learnt last term / Cosas aprendidas en este trimestre

• I am not good at understanding abstract concepts.
• My learning skills are decreasing each passing day.
• Ignorance is bliss
• I don't remember anything from my French lessons
• For some people, modesty is not considered a virtue.
• I cannot stand people that do not care about things. The rest does not matter, I only need them to show some interest.
• My friend Vicka is like the brilliant Rory Gilmore.
• I am a chaotic and histeric Lorelai Gilmore (if only I had her beautiful face & body *sigh*)
• Despite the aforementioned, some people still love me (God bless them)
• Once a year (approximately) I feel the urgent and weird need to smoke cigarretes and get drunk.
• Promises made 2 years ago (like having an irish coffe with a friend ;-) can be fulfilled.

• No soy buena con conceptos abstractos.
• Mis habilidades para aprender decrecen cada día.
• La ignorancia es felicidad
• No recuerdo nada de mis clases de francés
• Para algunas personas la modestia no es una virtud.
• No aguanto a la gente que no le importan las cosas. Lo demás me da igual, pero que al menos muestren interés.
• Mi amiga Vicka es como la brillante Rory Gilmore.
• Yo soy como Lorelai Gilmore, caótica e histérica (si al menos fuera físicamente como ella :-)
• A pesar de lo anterior algunas personas me quieren (Dios les bendiga)
• Una vez al año (aproximadamente) siento la urgente y extraña necesidad de fumar y emborracharme
• Las promesas hechas hace 2 años (como tomarse un café irlandés con un amigo ;-) pueden llegar a cumplirse.

"THE" exam / "EL" examen

I have to study a lot (exam on Thursday) and Pichí knows it. She is trying to keep me out of my favourite addictions: messenger, email, youtube... in short, the computer. Her method is very simple, pressing constantly a random key while lying in the laptop. Well... only this post and then back to study again. Wish me luck!

Tengo un montón que estudiar (examen el jueves) y Pichí lo sabe, así que me ayuda a mantenerme alejada de mis adicciones favoritas: messenger, email, youtube... en definitiva, del ordenador. Su método es muy sencillo, se tumba en el portátil y mientras presiona constantemente cualquier tecla aleatoria. Bueno, sólo este post y ya vuelvo a estudiar :-). ¡Deseadme suerte!

Resumen / Summary

Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el último post, aquí un resumen de lo que ha pasado en este tiempo.

• Celebración de mi santo y cumple en España
• Universidad y assignments
• Visita a Volendam y Monnickendam con Vicka y su marido Holly (foto)
• He terminado vida laboral.
  No es ningún trauma (es hasta bueno) pero con otro viajecito a España para papeleo.
• Para celebrarlo, visita a la fiesta de Halloween en el Parque Warner con amigos y muchas cenitas y visitas al cine
• Más universidad y assignments
• "N8" - Museum nacht
  Nacht (noche) de los museos en Amsterdam. Hasta las 2 de la mañana todos los museos abiertos, a nosotros nos dio tiempo a ver 8.
• Un examen.
  Muy chungo y siguiendo mi método de estudio, o sea todo en el último momento... así que dormí 4 horas y eso fue ya todo un lujo.
• Un trabajo final.
  El martes me pasé en la universidad de 10 de la mañana a 9 de la noche y luego en casa de 10 a 4 de la madrugada. Una jornada al menos amena gracias a mis compañeros Coen y Thijs que estarán encantados de que les cite en este blog.
• Ahora ya no tengo clases hasta el lunes (ni nada que hacer). Para relajarme me he dado un baño de espuma y con velitas :-)

It's been a long time since my last post, here a summary of all the things that have happened.

• 2 celebrations in Spain: my saint's day and my birthday
• University and assignments
• A visit to Volendam and Monnickendam with Vicka and her husband Holly (photo).
• I am officialy unemployed. (I was almost praying for this).
  Not a big deal (it's a good thing!) but it required another trip to Spain to do some paperwork.
• To celebrate the dismissal: a visit to Warner Bros Park (Halloween party), having dinners with friends and lots of movies in the cinema.
• More university and more assignments.
• "N8 museum"
  Museum Nacht (night) in Amsterdam. Most of the museums were open from 7pm to 2am. We visited 8 museums.
• One exam.
  Pretty difficult and following my own method of study, meaning studying in the last minute. So I slept only 4 hours and that can be considered a luxury.
• A final report.
  On Tuesday I spent the whole day working on it at the university (from 10am to 9pm) and also working at home from 10pm to 4am. At least my group mates Coen and Thijs make the day more pleasant. They'll love to be mentioned in this blog ;-)
• From Wednesday to Sunday I won't have anything to do. This is very unusual. On Wednesday I enjoyed a very relaxing moment taking a bath with candlelights :-)

Content Design and Intelligent User Interfaces

Esta es la cara que se le ha quedado a Pichí al saber el nombre de las asignaturas que tengo :-) Parece que va a ser un trimestre muy ocupado.

Content Design tiene como meta la adquisición de conocimientos sobre entornos de publicación basados en xml (contenido reutilizable, mecanismos de personalización, transformación y representación)

Intelligent User Interfaces cubre entre otros los siguientes aspectos: agentes personificados, gestión del diálogo, multimodalidad, interfaces de lenguaje natural, inteligencia ambiental y también evaluación.

Ha sido una semana muy agobiante, con todo lo de la universidad y también mis cinco horitas al día para Satec. Esto va a ser duro... pero no imposible.


This is Pichí's look after knowing the name of the subjects I have this period :-) It seems it is going to be such a busy quarter.

Content design is about the acquisition of knowledge concerning xml-based publishing environments (reusable content, mechanisms for personalization, transformation and presentation).

Intelligent User Interfaces covers, among others, these topics: embodied and social agents, dialogue management, multimodality, natural language interfaces, ambient intelligence and evaluation.

It has been a busy week, with all the university stuff and also my 5-hours-a-day for Satec. This is going to be hard... but hopefully not impossible.

Fin y principio

He estado unos días sin escribir por varios motivos.

Primero, no quería escribir antes de que Fer acabara su blog pero bien es sabido la cantidad de gente que empieza un blog y luego lo deja (espero no sumarme a esa estadística) y parece que Fer sería uno de ellos, porque le está costando horrores.

Segundo, desde el día 21 de Agosto estuve estudiando como una loca para el examen de "Knowledge Management" que tenía que repetir. En la foto véis el libro que la verdad está muy muy muy interesante. En el primer intento saqué un 5,2 (es que tiene un rollo filosófico que no veas) y resulta que aquí se aprueba con 5,5. A pesar de que en el resto de trabajos, seminarios, presentaciones y demás de la asignatura tenía buenas notas, tenía que repetir el examen así que estudié un montón e hice el examen el 30 de Agosto. Fué igual de dificil (preguntas del libro entero, 300 hojas de papers, diapositivas, prácticas... un horror) pero bueno, me salió mejor que la primera vez así que espero aprobar de sobra (espero!)

Tercero, después de hacer el examen y viendo que el comienzo del nuevo trimestre universitario era inminente (tengo clase el jueves!)... decidí darme un caprichito así que me fuí con Dani a Madrid el fin de semana. Es increible lo que se puede hacer en dos días: ir al cine, comer paella, pasear por Getafe, Madrid, cenar y comer con la familia, ir de compras, disfrutar de las terracitas... mil cosas! La verdad que ha sido un paréntesis fantástico.

Así que de nuevo comienza el curso... me he dado cuenta de que no he explicado lo que estoy estudiando: Master Content and Knowledge Engineering. Se aceptan sugerencias sobre lo que significa porque todo el mundo cuando se lo digo me dice: "Ah, cómo mola... y eso qué es?".

End and beginning

It's been some days since I wrote here. It was because:

First: I was waiting until Fer finished his "blog" but he didn't (he is going to be one of those who start a blog and never update it)
Second:I was studying for "Knowledge Management" (see photo). Terrible exam but hopefully I will pass this time.
Third: I was in Madrid last weekend as a "prize" for all this sacrifice studying and also because on Thursday the course starts again!
By the way... I never said I am studying "Master Content and Knowledge Engineering". When I tell this everybody says: "Oh, that rules... mmm and... what is about???"

Universiteit Utrecht

La Universidad de Utrecht me ha causado una buenísima impresión. La "student advisor" me aconsejó sobre las asignaturas a elegir este trimestre y sólo otra persona más ha empezado el master ahora en Febrero, pero al menos es una chica (sólo somos 3) y encima es la única extranjera (aparte de mí) ya que es de Indonesia.

Es increíble como aquí aprovechan para tomar café siempre que pueden. En la presentación de los master había café, té, bizcochos, para que cogieras lo que quisieras. Hay rincones con máquinas de café por todos lados, incluso con sillones de diseño y ya no digamos el hall hacia el restaurante, con una especie de lago en el interior, WIFI gratis y unos asientos rojos tipo carruaje repartidos en línea.

Al día siguiente hubo otra gran presentación esta vez con la intervención del "rector magnífico" y estuvo todo el tiempo haciendo bromas tipo "I am magnificus, jajaja" o "enjoy your life in utrecht during the day, I mean here at the University, and during the night... in the pub" :-) Aparte de esto el rector dijo cosas como que según el ranking de universidades de Shangay (el más prestigioso) la Universidad de utrecht es la número 1 del continente europeo.

Después tuve mi primera clase de la asignatura UCKS (Use of Content & Knowledge Systems) y fué concretamente sobre Navegación (Navigation behaviour) y todas las variables que pueden influir en la navegación. La verdad que me gustó mucho y no sé si todas las asignaturas van a estar centradas en algo tan interesante como esta, que tiene unos temas que se ajustan mucho a lo que me interesa aprender.

Ya veremos qué tal se me da ya que tengo que leer mucha documentación, y cada dos semanas hay que presentar un trabajo en grupo :-|
