When you live abroad your vacation planning changes a lot, mainly because your home country (your hometown, to be precise) suddenly becomes a 'holiday' destination. Please note the scare quotes because it is not holiday at all. Everybody who lives abroad knows that. You end up stressed out and pressured to catch up and meet with one million people in only 5 days, besides taking care of your family and some other errands such as official paperwork and doctor appointments (because we all prefer 'our' doctors!).

In some occasions there is also time for a proper holiday, away from 'home' and... 'the other home' :-) The country you live in can have a major role when it comes to choose where to go on vacation. I mean, while living in Spain you go a lot to... Spain! because Spain is great for holiday and we all know it! Places like Valencia, Castellón, Asturias, Baleares, Canarias... As for going abroad, a lot of people go to Mexico, Dominican Republic or Argentina.

However, while living in Spain we never thought of going to Aruba or Indonesia just because they are not popular destinations there or even countries you hear a lot about. These two countries are more popular in Holland: Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Indonesia is a former Dutch colony. Not only you hear a lot more about these places here, you also have more possibilities to actually meet people from there. My best friend from Utrecht University happens to be Indonesian and she gave the best tips ever for the fantastic holiday I just came back from :-)

Cuando vives en el extranjero tu plan de vacaciones varía considerablemente, sobre todo porque tu país (o más concretamente tu ciudad) de origen se convierte en tu nuevo destino 'de vacaciones'. Notad, por favor, las comillas... porque no son vacaciones para nada. Todo aquél que vive fuera lo sabe. Se termina estresado y presionado para ponerse al día y quedar con un millón de personas en 5 días aparte de tener que ocuparse de la familia y de algunos asuntos administrativos así como, por ejemplo, visitas al médico (porque todos preferimos 'nuestros' médicos!).

Pero a veces, hay tiempo para vacaciones de verdad fuera de 'casa' y... de 'la otra casa' :-) El país en el que vivas puede tener un papel importante a la hora de decidir dónde ir de vacaciones. Por ejemplo, cuando vivíamos en España solíamos pasar muchas vacaciones en... España! porque es un sitio genial para las vacaciones, todos lo sabemos. Sitios como Valencia, Castellón, Asturias, Baleares, Canarias... Y con respecto a salir fuera mucha gente elige México, República Dominicana o Argentina.

Sin embargo, mientras vivíamos en España nunca pensamos en ir a Aruba o a Indonesia simplemente porque no son países que sean muy conocidos como lugar de vacaciones o que ni siquiera se oiga hablar mucho de ellos. Estos dos países son mucho más populares en Holanda: Aruba forma parte del Reino de los Países Bajos e Indonesia es una antigua colonia Holandesa. No sólo se oye más sobre estos países, sino que aquí además tienes más posibilidades de conocer gente de aquellas tierras. Resulta que mi mejor amiga de la Universidad de Utrecht es de Indonesia y ella ha sido quien me ha dado los mejores consejos para las maravillosas vacaciones de las que acabo de volver :-)

I’ve been thinking of writing a series of posts on what our visitors, which have been quite a lot during all these years, think about Holland. We have heard the most extremely different things, from “Now we understand! You will never go back to Spain, this is greeeeaat!” to “We hate Amsterdam, it’s a dangerous city, we almost die... first run over by a tram, then a bicycle and then again, a tram”, including bizarre declarations like “Strange, I don’t see any poppy flower... hmph” (?!).

But one of our friends has gone beyond my expectations and has written his own post about the experience of visiting this country. Here it goes:

“In the Netherlands, as everyone knows, the bicycle is the most popular vehicle and there are hundreds, thousands, literally millions of bikes!!! But what not everyone knows (or at least I didn’t) is how they ride bikes in Holland... it’s just unbelievable. Really, you can think that you know how to ride a bike, but only when you get here and try to pedal on the streets of Amsterdam you realize that you have the skills of a 5 years old. It’s similar to when non native English speakers think they have an intermediate or even a high English level... until they speak to native speakers. Well, in the same way, Dutch could be considered the ‘native’ cyclists :-)

Coming back to the point, it's amazing! The Dutch handle bikes with a breathtaking ease and skill... they are able to pedal at high speed for the city and, at the same time, avoid people, cars or any architectural barrier, check their mobile, send SMS... even read a book! It’s just incredible!”

He estado pensando en escribir una serie de posts sobre las diferentes reacciones de quienes nos han visitado, y en estos años han sido unos cuantos, aquí en Holanda. Hemos oído las más variopintas y diferentes declaraciones, desde “¡Ahora lo entendemos todo! No vais a volver nunca a España. ¡Esto es geniaaaaal!” a “¡Odiamos Ámsterdam! ¡Qué ciudad más peligrosa! Casi morimos atropellados, primero por un tranvía, luego una bici y luego... ¡otro tranvía!”, pasando por rarezas del tipo “¡Qué raro! No veo ninguna amapola... hummm” (¿?).

Pero uno de nuestros amigos ha ido más allá de mis expectativas y ha escrito él solito un post sobre su experiencia en este país. Aquí va:

“En Holanda, como todo el mundo sabe, el medio de transporte por excelencia es la bicicleta. Hay cientos, miles, literalmente millones de bicicletas!!! Pero lo que no todo el mundo sabe (o al menos yo no sabía) es cómo manejan las bicicletas en Holanda... es increíble. De verdad, tú puedes creer que sabes montar en bicicleta, pero hasta que no llegas aquí e intentas pedalear por las calles de Ámsterdam no te das cuenta de que realmente tienes la misma habilidad que un niño pequeño. Es como el nivel de inglés cuando no eres nativo y piensas que tienes un nivel intermedio o incluso alto... pero la cosa cambia cuando hablas con un nativo. En ese sentido se podría decir que los holandeses son los ciclistas ‘nativos’ :-)

Volviendo al tema que nos ocupa, es increíble... los holandeses manejan la bicicleta con una soltura y una habilidad impresionantes... son capaces de pedalear a bastante velocidad por la ciudad y, a la vez, sortear a la gente, los coches o cualquier obstáculo arquitectónico, mirar el móvil, mandar mensajes... ¡hasta leer un libro! ¡Es sencillamente increíble!”

Easter visitors / Visita de Semana Santa

At last I can update this blog. A lot of things have happened since my last post but you will be duly informed about all these things in the following posts.

The first thing that should be commented here is that our friends José, Maria José and Marta came to visit us on Easter. It was the second visit for Marta, so we can say that the "second round" of visits has been officially opened.

We enjoyed a FAN-TAS-TIC weather (last year was the coldest Easter ever!) and we fell in love with Utrecht as we visited this city in a splendid sunny day and all the terraces along the canals were full of people and joy. We also visited Keukenhof and Alkmaar and it is incredible how beautiful this country can be when it is sunny!! We also seized the opportunity to go to the northern provinces of Friesland and Groningen, as we hadn't been there yet.

We are getting impacient now, wondering who the next visitors might be...


Por fin puedo actualizar el blog. Han pasado muchas cosas desde mi último post pero seréis debidamente informados de todas estas cosas en los próximos días.

Lo primero que debe ser comentado aquí es que nuestros amigos José, Maria José y Marta nos visitaron por Semana Santa. Era la segunda visita para Marta, así que ya podemos decir que la segunda ronda de visitas ha quedado oficialmente inaugurada.

Nos hizo un tiempo FAN-TÁS-TI-CO (el año pasado fue la Semana Santa más fría de la historia) y nos enamoramos de Utrecht ya que la visitamos en un espléndido día soleado y todas las terrazas de los canales estaban llenas de gente y vida. También visitamos Keukenhof y Alkmaar y es increíble lo bonito que puede ser este país cuando hace sol. Aprovechamos también la ocasión para ir a las provincias del Norte, Friesland y Groningen, ya que nunca antes habíamos estado allí.

Ahora estamos impacientes, preguntándonos quiénes serán los próximos en venir a visitarnos...

Visitors, visitors, visitors... / Visitas, visitas, visitas...

Once again, visitors!! This time you probably remember them: Ángel and Eduardo.

It was the first time abroad for Ángel, a.k.a. "Little furry". He was fascinated with things like the Dutch fast food (FEBO) and the hectic traffic in Amsterdam with trams, bicycles, cars and boats all around.

Eduardo is far from being a rookie when it comes to Dutch habits as he used to work in Eindhoven. In fact, it turned out that he knows Amsterdam better than me and he acted as our guide around the city.

Una vez más, ¡visita!. Esta vez probablemente les recordáis: Ángel y Eduardo.

Para Ángel, también conocido como "Peludín", era su primera vez en el extranjero y ha alucinado con cosas como el FEBO y la comida en las ventanitas en la pared, así como con el frenético tráfico en Asmterdam con tranvías, bicicletas, coches y barcos por doquier.

Eduardo está lejos de ser un novato en las costumbres holandesas ya que estuvo trabajando en Eindhoven unos cuantos meses. De hecho, él se orientaba mucho mejor que yo en Amsterdam y acabó siendo nuestro guía.

Esther, Marta & Víctor

Once again, we had visitors! Esther, Marta and Víctor came to stay for the shortest time with the coldest weather. Polar temperatures, it's snowing right now. We visited Muiden, Lelystad, Enkhuisen, Hoorn, Edam, Volendam, Monickendam, Heemstede, Zaandvort, Gouda, Dordrecht and Haarlem. We laughed a lot, played darts, sang in the car, danced in the street... By the way, there will be a prize if you guess what we are dancing to in this photo:



De nuevo, una vez más, ¡hemos tenido invitados! Esther, Marta y Víctor han venido a visitarnos por poco tiempo y con muchísimo frío. Ha hecho un frío polar y ahora mismo está nevando. Hemos visitado Muiden, Lelystad, Enkhuisen, Hoorn, Edam, Volendam, Monickendam, Heemstede, Zaandvort, Gouda, Dordrecht y Haarlem. Nos hemos reído muchísimo, jugado a los dardos, cantado en el coche, bailado en la calle... Por cierto, habrá un premio para el que adivine qué estamos bailando en la foto anterior.

One of the persons I admire the most / Una de las personas que más admiro

I think I've never mentioned that one of my brothers is also living here in The Netherlands. In fact, he came here 8 years ago and finally these 8 years yielded a result. He was hired by the European Space Agency (ESA) and he has been working almost all this time on the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) which has been launched almost one hour ago. A complete success for him indeed, because his job was about the ground test platforms, meaning that his part finished at the moment the ATV took off and that's already done.

He is one of the persons I admire the most specially because he has a great motivation for learning the most diverse range of topics from playing piano (studied in Madrid at the Royal Conservatory of Music) to learning Esperanto (self-study) including painting, having excellent grades in his degree (Aerospace Engineering) and also drawing amusing comics. He is a self-taught person (he learned English just listening to the radio!!) and to do this you need to be steadfast and persistent. He did also some sacrifices 'cause his job demanded a lot of travelling from Russia to France, Germany and even French Guiana too (where he is right now). From The Netherlands I want to say CONGRATULATIONS! to my brother 'cause you deserve all this great success and so much more.

Creo que nunca he mencionado que uno de mis hermanos está también viviendo en Holanda. De hecho, él vino aquí hace ya 8 años y finalmente han dado su fruto. Fue contratado por la European Space Agency (ESA) y ha estado trabajando casi todo este tiempo en el Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) el cual ha sido lanzado hace casi una hora. Un éxito para él, porque su trabajo abarca las plataformas de test en tierra, lo que significa que su parte ha terminado en el momento que el ATV ha despegado.

Es una de las personas que más admiro sobre todo por lo motivado que está para aprender materias de lo más variopinto, desde tocar el piano (estudió en el Conservatorio de Madrid) a aprender Esperanto (por su cuenta) pasando por pintar, tener excelentes notas en su carrera (Ingeniería Aeronáutica) y también dibujar ingeniosos y divertidos cómics. Es un autodidacta (¡¡aprendió inglés escuchando la radio!!) y para esto se necesita ser constante y tenaz. También ha tenido que hacer sacrificios puesto que su trabajo requería muchos viajes: Rusia, Francia, Alemania e incluso la Guayana Francesa (donde está ahora mismo). Desde Holanda quiero decirte ¡FELICIDADES! porque te mereces todo este éxito y mucho más.

Visitors and surprises / Visitas y sorpresas

We had special visitors this weekend. On one hand, the prettiest, my earthquake, my beloved and amusing Judith. She needed a break from her routine and thanks to her I took a break too. I had a great time with her and I had the privilege of enjoying her fantastic conversations. She is one of a kind. If I have a daughter someday I will name her Judith.

On the other hand, a surprising discovery: Eduardo. Another Spanish in The Netherlands who is also trying to settle here, in this flat land. Amusing, kind, a clever talker and a very good photographer. Pestosín, his best friend, also joined us and he just won my heart, I hope he is also missing me.

The thing is that the combination of all of them during the weekend has been more than special. It's been a long time since I enjoyed myself so much. Moreover I finally escaped from myself and I learned to make mojitos (thanks Edu!) and I also had some problems with my pronounciation and some mishaps with parking tickets. Even the windmills chased us like they did with the famous knight-errant (hey! we are Spaniards!).

Finally, when they left, there was nothing but a big vacuum. And the question remains... could these fantastic moments happen again?. Simply, there are not enough words to express this. I really miss you. I mean it.


Hemos tenido unas visitas absolutamente geniales. Por un lado, la guapísima, terremoto, divertida Judith. Ella que quería tener aquí un paréntesis resulta que también me ha dado a mí otro. Han sido unos días geniales con ella... disfrutando de su maravillosa compañía y conversación. Es que es única. Yo creo que si algún día tengo una hija le voy a llamar Judith.

Por otro lado, un descubrimiento que ha sido toda una sorpresa: Eduardo. Otro español "in The Netherlands" que como nosotros intenta integrarse un poco en estas tierras planas. Divertido, atento, hablador y muy buen fotógrafo (observador). Su amigo Pestosín también vino y me ha robado el corazón, espero que él también me eche de menos.

Y lo que ha pasado es que la combinación de todos ellos durante el fin de semana ha sido más que especial, hacía mucho tiempo que no me lo pasaba tan bien, y además... por fin me evadí un poco de mí misma y aprendí a hacer mojitos (¡gracias Edu!) y tuve problemas de pronunciación y percances con tickets de parking. Los molinos nos perseguían haciendo un guiño al gran hidalgo y caballero andante, que para eso somos españoles.

Luego, un gran vacío cuando se fueron los tres, porque además ¿cuándo se repetirá esta bonita combinación?. En fin, no hay palabras para expresar esto. Os echo mucho de menos. Mucho.

Amistad / Friendship (II)

Aquí véis a Mark y Reine. Mark es otro compañero de Dani de UPC y también un buen amigo. Mark colecciona ¡calaveras y esqueletos! Al principio pensé que su casa sería un poco tétrica, terrorífica... pero al final se parece más a un museo arqueológico, hasta educativo. Mark y Reine son una bonita pareja y unas de esas "cosas buenas" que hemos encontrado en este país. Ellos están cuidando de nuestra Pichí y seguro que se lo va a pasar muy bien allí. Muchas gracias amigos, por la encantadora velada que pasamos con vosotros y por cuidar a nuestra gatita.

These are Mark and Reine. Mark is Daniel's colleague at UPC and they are also good friends. He collects skulls and skeletons!! At first I thought his house would be very gloomy and even terrifying but at the end it was something more close to an archeological museum, even instructive. Mark and Reine are a lovely couple and one of those "good things" that we have found in this country. They are taking care of our little Pichí and I think she is gonna be very happy there. Many thanks friends, for the lovely evening we had with you and for taking care of our kitten.

Amistad / Friendship

Me encanta esta foto porque me parece una buenísima foto para representar la amistad. Éste es Angelos, compañero de Dani en UPC y realmente creo que ellos han congeniado desde el primer día. Hay algo que me encanta de esta foto y todavía no sé qué es... su mirada tan sincera, supongo.

I really like this photo because I can see a true friendship here. This is Angelos, Daniel's co-worker at UPC and I think they got along with each other from the very first day. There's something I really like in this photo and I don't know exactly what it is yet... their sincere looks probably.
