A few weeks ago we decided to put all the things learned in our ski lessons into practice. We tried to find the closest place so that we can save some money and go by car. We found a region in Germany called "Sauerland" which have various ski stations and was only 4 hours by car from Amsterdam.

So, we were skiing and I have to say I have improved my skills thanks to the lessons. Anyway, I am still very cautious and, taking into account the bad news of today (about Liam Neeson's wife), I am seriously considering the use of a helmet. Take care, please.


Hace unas semanas decidimos poner en práctica todo lo que aprendimos en nuestras clases de esquí. Estuvimos buscando el lugar más cercano al que pudiéramos ir en coche, para ahorrar un poco, y encontramos una región llamada "Sauerland" (Alemania). Tiene varias estaciones de esquí y está a tan sólo 4 horas en coche de Amsterdam.

Así que estuvimos esquiando, y he de decir que he mejorado mucho gracias a las clases. De cualquier modo, sigo siendo muy precavida, y teniendo en cuenta la mala noticia de hoy (sobre la esposa de Liam Neeson), estoy considerando seriamente usar casco. Tened cuidado, por favor.

Quick&Easy Cooking / Cocina fácil y rápida

In this hectic life, working 8 hours a day, taking care of the children (not our case), saving time for learning new things, keeping in touch with family and friends, mantaining a healthy lifestyle, etc... there's no time for cooking!! So, to help us, Albert Heijn have designed one of the weirdest things I've ever seen in a supermarket.

On the left side of the picture you can see the numbers 1,2,3,4 ordered bottom-up. This is the order you should follow to choose the better ingredients for your recipe (they also show some suggestions in this respect).

First, you choose the main ingredient such as rice or pasta. Then, a vegetable mix has to be chosen (carrots & celery, leek & green beans...). Right after, you choose another important ingredient that is usually meat (beef, pork, chicken) or a vegetarian option (falafel). Finally you have to pick up a sauce that fits properly with the rest of ingredients (tomato & pesto, cream sauce...)

If you click on the picture you will see it better but I have to warn the Spaniards... there is a paella sauce!!! (no comments).


Con esta vida tan agitada, trabajando 8 horas diarias, cuidando a los niños (aunque no es nuestro caso), sacando tiempo para aprender cosas nuevas, manteniendo el contacto con la familia y amigos, cuidando nuestra salud... ¡¡¡no queda tiempo para cocinar!!! Así que, para ayudarnos, Albert Heijn ha diseñado una de las cosas más raras que he visto en un supermercado.

A la izquierda de la foto podéis ver los números del 1 al 4 ordenados de abajo arriba. Este es el orden que tienes que seguir para escoger los mejores ingredientes para tu plato (también tienen sugerencias en este sentido).

Primero eliges el ingrediente principal (pasta o arroz). Después puedes elegir un mix de vegetales (zanahorias y apio, puerro y judías verdes...). En tercer lugar eliges otro ingrediente importante que será carne (ternera, pollo o cerdo) o una opción vegetariana (falafel). Finalmente hay que escoger una salsa que vaya acorde con el resto de los ingredientes (tomate y pesto, nata...)

Si hacéis click en la foto lo veréis más grande pero tengo que hacer una advertencia a los españoles... ¡¡¡hay una salsa para hacer paella!!! (sin comentarios).

Skiing in Hoofddorp / Esquiar en Hoofddorp

Daniel never gives up easily and he managed to convince me to take some ski lessons. We are far from being expert skiers but we keep on trying.

The amazing thing is that we have a ski station in our own town!! Yes, yes... in The Netherlands! The country with no mountains at all. Of course it is an artificial one but that makes it perfect for learning. It has two big slopes, one of them is green (the easiest for beginners) and the other one is a vast slope with three diferent stretchs: two red ones (average inclination 40%) and one scary black slope (average inclination 50%). I would have never believed that on my second lesson I would go down a red slope. It was not perfect... but I did it!!!

And the question is... do you have a ski piste 10 minutes by bike from your home???? ;-)


Dani nunca se rinde fácilmente y ha logrado convencerme para apuntarnos a clases de esquí. Aunque estamos lejos de ser expertos esquiadores seguimos intentándolo.

Lo sorprendente es que tenemos una estación de esquí ¡¡en nuesta propia ciudad!! Sí, sí... ¡en Holanda! El país que no tiene ni una sola montaña. Por supuesto que es artificial pero eso la hace ideal para aprender. Tiene dos grandes pistas, una verde para los principiantes y luego una enorme dividida en tramos: dos tramos rojos (inclinación media del 40%) y un espeluznante tramo negro (inclinación media del 50%). Nunca habría imaginado que bajaría una pista roja en mi segunda lección. No fue perfecto... pero ¡lo hice!!!

Y la pregunta es... ¿tienes tú una pista de esquí a 10 minutos en bicicleta de tu casa???? ;-)

Let it snow! / ¡Que nieve!

We like adventure and we like driving, so we drove to Madrid last Christmas passing by wonderful places like Disneyland Paris, Orleans, Chambord Castle (photo), Tours and Bordeaux.

What we didn't know is that Madrid was going to be collapsed due to heavy snow on the date we were supposed to leave. This "heavy snow" is probably something Canadians would laugh at because it was only 7 centimeters of snow, but that's "heavy snow" for us. Anyway this shouldn't be enough to collapse everything: highways, airport, bypasses... and the Government has been widely criticized for this reason.

Despite this chaos, and having said that we like adventure, we left Madrid anyway skipping the blocked roads by making a "slight" detour through Valladolid.



Outbond trip: 1,799 km, about 16 hours 57 minutes.
Return trip: 1,889 km, about 17 hours 46 minutes.


Como nos gusta la aventura y nos gusta conducir, fuimos a Madrid en coche en las fiestas Navideñas y aprovechamos para pararnos en bonitos lugares como Disneyland París, Orleans, el Castillo de Chambord (foto), Tours y Burdeos.

Lo que no sabíamos es que Madrid iba a estar colapsado el día que teníamos que volvernos debido a una fuerte nevada. Esta "fuerte nevada" es algo que haría mucha gracia a los Canadienses ya que fueron sólo 7 centímetros de nieve, aunque eso es mucha nieve para nosotros. De todas formas eso no es suficiente para colapsar toda una ciudad: autopistas, aeropuerto, circunvalaciones... y el Gobierno ha sido duramente critizado por este motivo.

A pesar del caos, y ya que hemos dicho que nos gusta la aventura, salimos igualmente y evitamos las carreteras bloqueadas haciendo un "pequeño" desvío por Valladolid.

Viaje de ida: 1,799 km., unas 16 horas y 57 minutos.
Viaje de vuelta: 1889 km., unas 17 horas y 46 minutos.

Second hand market / Mercado de segunda mano

In these times of economic crisis we all have to save money somehow and the second hand market becomes a possibility as it is quite big in The Netherlands. There's a website called Marktplaats (in Dutch) where you can find almost everything. Moreover, there are lots of expats who come here for one year and at the end of their stay they sell a lot of stuff almost new.

Of course, bicycles are the flagship product in the second hand market. Ours are second hand and they are in a very good condition. When we came here we bought some second hand stuff because we didn't know how long we were gonna stay here, so we thought it was not worth buying new furniture. For example our diswasher is second hand and I can tell you it's way much better than the new one we bought a few years ago in Spain.

En estos tiempos de crisis económica todos tenemos que ahorrar de alguna manera y el mercado de segunda mano se convierte en una posibilidad ya que es bastante grande en Holanda. Hay una web llamada Marktplaats (en holandés) en el que se puede encontrar de casi todo. Además, hay un montón de expatriados que vienen aquí para trabajar por un año y cuando se van venden un montón de cosas que están como nuevas.

Las bicicletas son el producto estrella en el mercado de segunda mano. Las nuestras lo son y están muy bien. Cuando llegamos aquí compramos bastantes cosas de segunda manos puesto que no sabíamos cuánto tiempo íbamos a quedarnos y pensamos que no merecía la pena comprar cosas nuevas. Por ejemplo, nuestro lavavajillas es de segunda mano y ha resultado ser mucho mejor que el que compramos nuevo en España.

Visitors, visitors, visitors... / Visitas, visitas, visitas...

Once again, visitors!! This time you probably remember them: Ángel and Eduardo.

It was the first time abroad for Ángel, a.k.a. "Little furry". He was fascinated with things like the Dutch fast food (FEBO) and the hectic traffic in Amsterdam with trams, bicycles, cars and boats all around.

Eduardo is far from being a rookie when it comes to Dutch habits as he used to work in Eindhoven. In fact, it turned out that he knows Amsterdam better than me and he acted as our guide around the city.

Una vez más, ¡visita!. Esta vez probablemente les recordáis: Ángel y Eduardo.

Para Ángel, también conocido como "Peludín", era su primera vez en el extranjero y ha alucinado con cosas como el FEBO y la comida en las ventanitas en la pared, así como con el frenético tráfico en Asmterdam con tranvías, bicicletas, coches y barcos por doquier.

Eduardo está lejos de ser un novato en las costumbres holandesas ya que estuvo trabajando en Eindhoven unos cuantos meses. De hecho, él se orientaba mucho mejor que yo en Amsterdam y acabó siendo nuestro guía.

Weekends around Europe / "Findes" por Europa

One of the good things of living in a country as big as Extremadura is the weekend trips you can make (just by car) to different countries like Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg or France. For example, we have been in Berlin, Hannover and Paris in less than one month. Berlin was a great, great discover. A vibrant and very modern city. Paris, although it wasn't our first time there, is always so romantic! And this time it was even more because this trip was my birthday gift and it was a long weekend full of nice surprises. I have to thank Daniel (once again) for the best gift ever!

Una de las ventajas de vivir en un país tan grande como la comunidad de Extremadura es que puedes hacer escapadas en coche a Alemania, Bélgica, Luxemburgo o Francia. Por ejemplo, hemos estado en Berlín, Hannover y París en menos de un mes. Berlín fue un gran descubrimiento. Una ciudad efervescente y muy moderna. París, aunque ya lo conocíamos, es ¡tan romántica!. Y esta vez lo fue incluso más ya que este viaje fue mi regalo de cumpleaños y estuvo lleno de maravillosas sorpresas. Tengo que dar las gracias a Dani (una vez más) por ¡el mejor regalo que me han hecho nunca!

Shopping in Holland / De compras en Holanda

Where would you prefer to go shopping, Madrid or Amsterdam?

Well, it may seem difficult to answer at the beginning, so to make things easier here you go the opening hours of a well-known shop in Amsterdam:

Mon: 12:00 - 18:30
Tue-Wed: 10:00 - 18:30
Thu: 10:00 - 21:00
Fri-Sat: 10:00 - 18:30
Sun: 12:00 - 18:00

The same shop in Madrid:

Mon-Sun: 10:00 - 22:00

This is not a particular case, this is almost a rule. It's not only that you would need a PDA or a piece of paper in The Netherlands in order to remember the opening hours for every single day of the week but also you have much less time to go shopping in Amsterdam than in Madrid, or Spain in general. Besides, the closing time in Madrid means that you can go to the cash register at that time, even later, but in The Netherlands, the closing time reflects when the shop has to be completely closed.

Sometimes is even worse and the shop closes 5 minutes ahead, so you might think that if the shop closes at 18.00, for instance, at that time the shop assistants will be already at home. So you better get your shopping done 15-20 minutes before the closing hour, otherwise you'll be kindly requested to leave the shop and of course, don't even dare to think about entering the shop in the last half an hour.

Having said that, the next question would be: in which of these cities would you prefer to work in a shop? No need to answer this one :-)


¿Dónde preferirías ir de compras, Madrid o Amsterdam?

Bien, puede parecer difícil al principio, así que para ponértelo más fácil aquí tienes el horario de apertura de una tienda muy conocida de Amsterdam:

Lun: 12:00 - 18:30
Mar-Mié: 10:00 - 18:30
Jue: 10:00 - 21:00
Vie-Sáb: 10:00 - 18:30
Dom: 12:00 - 18:00

La misma tienda en Madrid:

Lun-Dom: 10:00 - 22:00

No es un caso particular, es lo habitual. No es sólo que necesites en Holanda una PDA o un trozo de papel para recordar el horario de cada día de la semana, sino que también tienes mucho menos tiempo para comprar en Amsterdam que en Madrid, o España en general. Además, la hora de cierre en Madrid significa que ese es el momento de ir a la caja a pagar, o incluso más tarde, pero en Holanda, la hora de cierre es el momento en el cual la tienda tiene que estar completamente cerrada.

A veces es incluso peor, y la tienda cierra 5 minutos antes de la hora, por lo que podremos pensar acertadamente que si la tienda cierra a las 18.00, por ejemplo, a esa hora los dependientes estarán ya en su casa. Por este motivo es mejor ir terminando las compras 15 o 20 minutos antes del cierre o seremos amablemente invitados a abandonar el local en cualquier momento y por supuesto, ni se te ocurra pensar en entrar en la tienda en la última media hora de apertura.

Habiendo dicho esto, la siguiente pregunta sería: en cuál de estas ciudades te gustaría trabajar? No hace falta contestar a ésta :-)
